According to the author's childhood buddy, Don Burrous, there is a "petrified forest" on the northeast corner of the Angelina County Airport property near the original end of the east-west runway (it has since been extended).
When the east-west runway was built, heavy rains washed out the newly disturbed soil revaling numerous pieces of petrified wood. Some were entire tree trunks. This is not surprising since author recalls finding many small pieces of petrified wood on the property owned by Mrs. I. D. Fairchild perhaps a quarter mile away where he lived for a time as a child.
