Burke Occupations
Insight into what early Burke residents did for a living is provided by
the U. S. census schedules. The only available schedules for post-founding
Burke are 1900-1930. Censuses after 1930 have not been released, and the
1890 census was destroyed in a fire. The 1880 census was taken before Burke
was founded when the area was known as Bradley Prairie.
As one would expect for a farming area, most residents of Burke and surrounding
areas were either farmers or farm laborers. The occupations shown in the
rest of this article are occupations other than farming or related occupations.
