Travis Family

Jim and Abbie Travis were long term teachers at Burke School. In the mid-1950s Abbie taught 3rd grade and 4-8 Language, and Jim taught 6th grade and 4-8 mathematics.

Jim taught at Burke at least twice, once in the 1930s and again in the 1950s. They also taught at several other schools in the area through the years.

Jim's real given name was Johnny Earsel, but he disliked it so much that he went by "Jim". The author, who was a student of both Travises, recalls that Abbie claimed to be from the Hemphill area. She also once stated that Jim was her teacher at one time.

The Travises had the following children:
