The Ivys of Burke descend from Isham and Lavinia Ivy, Jr., who lived in Bladen (later Robeson) County, North Carolina. The Ivys may have moved to Alabama before settling in Clarke County, Mississippi.
Isham's son, Benjamin Franklin Ivy (1832-1895) was born either in Alabama or Mississippi, and he lived in Clarke County, Mississippi in 1850. He came to Newton County, Texas about 1855. In 1857 he married Nancy Fuller (1836-1907), a daughter of Seaborn J. and Sarah Fuller in Newton County. Benjamin and Nancy had 6 children:
The first three children were born in Newton County.
Both Benjamin and Nancy are buried at Ryan Chapel Cemetery.
Jeff and Josephine Ivy
Josephine Smith's parents were Joseph Smith (1805), a Mississippi native, and Mary Elizabeth Brooks (1836), a Georgia native. Josephine's siblings were Amanda (1865); John R. (1867),who married Jeff's sister Emma; and Sarah W. (1873).
Josie was very short while Jeff was quite tall. Josie lost her eyesight just as her father had before her, and she was lovingly called "blind grandma" as well as "redheaded grandma." Both Jeff and Josie are buried at Ryan Chapel Cemetery.
William T. (Will) married Almedia "Medy" Parker. Will was a well-known fiddler in the Burke area. Their children were:
Medy lived along for many years in a small house north of Burke. She often sat on her front porch in a straight chair, and whe was not often seen without her bonnet. She was a sister to Missouri McGinnis, Victoria "Vickie" Brezeale, and Laura Rogers of Hoshall.
